Day 1 - Emergency First Aid

Introduction to First Aid

  • Importance of first aid in the workplace

  • The role of the first aider

  • Legal considerations and responsibilities

Assessment of the Situation

  • Assessing the environment and ensuring personal safety

  • Checking the casualty’s condition and calling for help

  • Identifying if further medical help is needed

Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for adults

  • Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if available

  • Recovery position and airway management

Managing Unconscious Casualties

  • How to approach and assess an unconscious person

  • The recovery position and its importance

Wounds and Bleeding

  • Types of wounds: cuts, grazes, puncture wounds, and abrasions

  • How to control bleeding using pressure, bandages, and dressings

  • Dealing with severe bleeding and shock

Burns and Scalds

  • Types of burns: minor, moderate, and severe

  • How to treat burns and scalds, including cooling and dressing

Seizures

  • How to help someone who is having a seizure.

  • How to identify different seizure types.

  • What causes a seizure.

Choking

  • Recognizing the signs of choking

  • Performing the correct treatment for adults and children

Shock

  • Recognizing the symptoms of shock

  • How to treat and manage shock until professional help arrives.

Health and Safety at Work

  • Preventative measures to reduce workplace injuries

  • Understanding common workplace hazards and how to manage them

  • Accident Reporting.

Bites & Stings

  • How to identify bites and stings on the body

  • How to deal with a Bee sting

  • How to remove a Tick

  • The understanding of the risks from Lyme disease

  • How to treat a bite from an animal or human

Day 2 - Injuries & Illnesses

Head injuries

  • Identifying different types of severe head injuries including Compression, Fractured skull and Concussion

  • How to treat severe head wounds

Suspected Spinal injuries

  • How to help someone who has a suspected spinal

  • How to perform a log roll for a casualty who needs to vomit and is suffering from a suspected spinal

  • The understanding of the back and spine

Eye injuries

  • How to help someone who is suffering from a minor and major eye injury

  • How to wash out a minor object from the eye using sterile eye wash

Chest injuries

  • How to identify a penetrating chest wound and what to do

  • How to identify and help someone who is suffering from broken ribs

Crush injuries

  • What to do if someone has been crushed

Broken bones & Dislocations

  • What to do if someone has broken something

  • How to immobilise a broken boke for safe transport to hospital

Sprains & Strains

  • How to help someone who has a soft tissue injury

Severe Burns

  • How to help someone who is suffering from a severe burn

  • What to do if someone has a chemical or electrical burn

Secondary Survey

  • How to perform a methodical head to toe check on a casualty who is responsive or unresponsive

Heart attack

  • How to identify if someone is having a heart attack and what to do to help them

Angina

  • How to identify the difference between Heart Attack and Angina and how to help

Stroke

  • How to test someone who you think is having a stroke and how to help

Asthma

  • How to help someone who is having an asthma attack

Anaphylaxis

  • How to identify if someone is suffering from a severe allergic reaction

  • How to deliver an Auto injector for someone who is suffering from a severe allergic reaction

Diabetes

  • How to identify if someone is suffering from Hypoglycaemia and how to help restore blood sugar levels

Poisoning

  • Identify how poisons enter the body

  • How to help someone who you believe has been poisoned

At the end of the course, participants are assessed through a combination of practical assessments and written exams in the form of a multiple choice question paper. Successfully completing the course results in a certification valid for three years.
